AVerMedia Donates Technology to help in the “Greening of Greensburg”

On May 4, 2007 the town of Greensburg, Kansas was devastated by an EF5 tornado, the most severe rating a tornado can be issued. The two mile wide twister traveled virtually straight up Main St, destroying approximately 75% of all homes, businesses and buildings, including all three schools.

Only five days following the tornado, Greensburg decided to not only rebuild, but to rebuild as a sustainable, environmentally responsible Leed Platinum rated “Green” city. Attracting national and international attention, and even spawning a television show to monitor its progress, the completed Greensburg Green concepts will serve as a model for modernizing and “Greening” cities and towns all over the world.

While planning for the rebuilding of the Greensburg schools, USD422 set to follow the same Leed Platinum Green Standards. Set for completion in 2010, the new USD422 building will house the elementary, middle and high school, broken up into three parts of the campus. The challenge was not only to create a Leed Platinum building, but to integrate technology into the curriculum that would also follow Green guidelines.

Upon learning of Greensburg's need for Green technology in the classroom, AVerMedia began working with the district to determine the best product to fit both their visual demonstration needs, as well as their environmental standards.

Selected was the AVerVision CP300 Interactive Document Camera. The CP300 allows users to display documents and objects digitally on a large display, thus photo copies, transparencies, workbooks and other printed material can be significantly reduced. Furthermore annotation, image capture and video recording allow teachers to digitally mark-up content, then save the images and video for later use or reference. This also reduces the need to mark actual documents by creating a digital learning environment.

On March 26, 2009 AVerMedia presented Greensburg USD422 with 22 AVerVision CP300 Interactive Document Cameras, one for every classroom in Greensburg. These products will not only add to Greensburg's environmental sustainability goals, but also provide 21st century classroom solutions in a forward looking, 21st century Green city.

“We are finding that the rebuilding would not be near as successful without the generosity of corporate sponsors such as AVerMedia,” says Darin Headrick, Superintendent of Schools, USD 422 Greensburg, KS.

AVerMedia looks forward to continuing to support Greensburg's efforts through both their Green standards as well as advancing their 21st century curriculum.
